My paternal great grandmother was Mary Wargo. She was born April 1872 and immigrated to the US in 1882. Whether she and her Wargo family came directly to Mount Carmel, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania first or possible the Wikes Barre/Scranton, Pennsylvania area I do not know. However, she married my paternal grandfather, Michael Josef, about 1892 and they lived in Mount Carmel beginning at least by 1893, the year their first born, Mary Anna Joseph, was born in Mount Carmel. The 1890 Federal census would help greatly! The other children they had, all born in Mount Carmel, were: Michael Vincent Joseph (my paternal grandfather) born 1896, Joseph Joseph born 1903, Leo Vincent Joseph born 1905, and Margaret Mary Joseph born 1907 (Major in the US Army Nurse Corps). My paternal grandfather and great aunts/uncles are all deceased.

The godparents listed on my paternal grandfather’s (Michael Vincent Joseph) baptismal certificate: Andrew Pathos and Susanna Susher. This couple was also listed on Margaret Mary Joseph’s baptismal certificate. Both baptisms took place at St. John’s the Baptist in Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania.

On the 1910 Federal census one Emily Wargo Joseph, niece, was listed as staying with Michal Josef and his wife Mary Wargo. Emily was born 1899. Her parents were Joseph Muygas Joseph and Elizabeth Wargo. I think Emily’s mother, this Elizabeth Wargo, was born 1870 but did not immigrate to the US until 1891.

By the 1910 Federal census Josef had become Americanized into Joseph.

Perhaps there is a Wargo connection here.
