I know I sent the original post without date--very dumb. In any case, the
1st marriage was in 1868, the 2nd in 1873. I have been through the divorce
dockets and there was no divorce from the 1st husband. I've also been
through the death indexes and he isn't listed as having died either. What I
did find in the divorce dockets was that either the 1st husband or someone
with his exact name divorced his wife in 1869--a wife who was not my
ancestor. This would make him a bigamist and my ancestor would not actually
have been married to him, thereby giving her a reason for
using her maiden name. I was hopiing to give him the benefit of the doubt,
but I'm leaning toward the bigamist theory.....
