I've finally located my DEXHEIMER family (indexed under
Jacbo Deschemer) in the 1860 census (17th Ward, Dwelling
1923, p. 1079) living with son-in-law Conrad HILL.

This has been a difficult research project because his son,
also named Jacob Dexheimer, is not to be found in the 1850
or 1860 censuses despite the fact that he arrived in Philadelphia
in 1844 and appears almost without exception in the city
directories as a tailor from 1844 until 1885, at different locations.

The elder Jacob's wife (the younger Jacob's mother) according
to family records died in Philadelphia on 26 July 1861. A search
for the death at the Archives yielded pages that were impossible
to read at all, and no newspaper mention was found by the Free
Library. So now I'm trying to zero in on where the Dexheimer
& Hill families were living at that time so I can find where
Margaret Hofmann Dexheimer is buried. Since the 1860 census
information is not sufficient for this, I'm wondering if the
Philadelphia city directories are accessible online or otherwise
(earlier look-ups were done for me by a friend who was doing
research at the Philadelphia Archives).

The situation is complicated by the fact that I 'm quite certain
that the name of the person I need to look up, son-in-law
Conrad Hill (Musician born in Hesse-Darmstadt), is a distortion
or truncation of his birth name, or possibly a "stage" name,
since he's a musician. I'm just hoping that he might be found
under that name in a city directory, or something recognizable
when seen together with his first name and occupation.

I'm also wondering if there is an index to the 1870 Philadelphia
census, and how to gain access. (The younger Jacob finally
appears in the 1880 census, his father having died by that
time in New York City.).

Any advice or suggestions will be gratefully received, including
references to a professional researcher if that is the route I
need to take.

Thanks for your help,

Elsa in Allegany County, Maryland
