I visited DC this week and spent some time at NARA. On the first day, a steam
pipe broke in the basement, they shut off the electricity, evacuated the
building, and closed it for the day. The next day I tried to cram the work on a
2-day "Need To Do" list into 1, and I guess you know how that goes.........No
point here, just whining.

Anyway, while standing outside awaiting the verdict, I met Elaine Powell from
Orlando
who is Pres. of her local genealogical society who took me to a terrific
find--the DAR library. You can get Revolutionary War records, each state has a
room which it has decorated in historic style, and there is a terrific library.
The people are lovely. If you get to DC, it's worth a stop.

NARA--DC has moved it's microfilm from the 4th to the 1st floor. It's clean
and lovely but I don't know if it's any more efficient, except that you can
choose your own reader, unlike the past when they assigned people to readers, the
point of which I never understood. I found the staff a lot more
knowledgable, and very helpful.
