Ed,
Thanks for the info. You were correct. I spoke to Helene at Visitation this
AM. Father Walsh did marry Patrick BOYLE and Mary SULLIVAN. She is going to
mail me a certificate. I was surprised to learn they were married there. I did
not think they were married in a Catholic church. He was a bartender and she
died within 11 years of alcoholism. I simply expected something else.
Of additional interest, my other great grandparents George HUNTER and Sarah
HAMILL were married at Visitation BVM on November 27, 1901. So you can imagine
my surprise. They may have known one another.
With your knowledge of the parish, I am wondering if you can shed some light
on this: Sarah died of tuberculosis in 1910, Mary in 1906. Both of my
grandparents Joseph BOYLE and Edward HUNTER, as well as some of their siblings were
sent off to St Francis orphanage in Eddington, eventhough their fathers were
still around. I am sure this was fairly commonplace in those days, but I am
wondering how the parish may have helped or if this was commonplace throughout the
archdiocese. Do you have any thoughts on this?
Also, can you provide me with the title of your book and publisher or an ISDN
number? I would like to see if I can get a copy.
Again, thanks for the help. All the best to you and yours.
Regards,
Joe Hunter
