Unfortunately, the reverse was also true. If an American-born woman
married an alien resident during those years, she became a citizen
of whatever country her husband was from. To further confuse the
matter, if her husband later naturalized before 1922, she became a
US citizen again. I've never looked into whether a US born female
married to an alien resident regained her citizenship automatically
after the 1922 immigrant law changes.
