At the Philadelphia Archives I was able to view the roster card and roster book for my great-grandfather who was "on the job" between 1909 and 1943. I was able to get date of commission, promotion dates, ranks and districts served, and retirement date.

I expect there's more information but not bad for my first visit.

I'd love to hear what other information is available if anyone else has conducted similar research.
