I have a slight problem. My Great Grandfather was a William Parry, Master Mariner. As is often the case in Family History, you think you have things tied up and just go a little further and find things aren't quite right.
This was the case with William Parry. Although rumour had it be absconded to Australia, I found him or so I thought I had, and found a death entry in 1870 which tied up with his wife Anne being a widow on the 1871 census.
As I ventured more into the family, I had chance to see the 1851 census for Nefyn and found my William with his father John Parry (Sawyer) and William aged 11 (Scholar) Correct. When I checked the 1861 census William was still with his father but was listed as a Sawyer, the same as his father. Now this is where my problems start because my William Parry married Anne Davies 9/7/1861 after the census where he was listed as a Mariner and is also listed as a Mariner on the birth certificates of his two daughters. This makes me think this isn't my William Parry. I also found a death entry for this William Parry who died 6/2/1870 of Consumption. I did think originally that the rumour of his absconding was just a story to cover for his death.
So here's my problem. Did my William Parry really leave his family and flee to Australia??
To give you more facts, William Parry and Anne Davies were married in Llandanwg, Merioneth and stayed in that area. I have the census details for Anne for 1871, 1881 and 1891 still living in the Llandanwg/Harlech area of North Wales.
If anyone has any thoughts or possible links with a William Parry who may have shipped to Australia between 1868-1871 I would be very interested to hear from you.
In the meantime, Merry Xmas.
regards
Geraint
