I'm glad it was of help, Piers.

The Probate Calendar [National Index] is not (currently) available online - you can find out more information about it at http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/cms/1226.htm . Some local libraries and record offices have copies of it, e.g. Birmingham library has the books for 1858-1972. I photographed them there and have got as far as transcribing the names up to 1923, which are on my website (see http://homepage.ntlworld.com/im.griffiths/parryfamilyhistory/parryprobate/probateindex.htm) so that was how I found William Valentine Parry's entry so easily - then it was just a matter of checking on the image for the full details.

Now that you have that information, you can obtain a copy of the Will, as described on the HM Courts service web page (and, with his death date, should be able to identify his death in the civil registration indexes if you want his death certificate).

With regard to the marriage, I used FreeBMD at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl (Ancestry have this index on their site, but may be slightly behind with updates). If you search with Parry in the surname and then use valentine as the first name, it will find all entries where Valentine appears as a middle name (bear in mind that there may be others as well - FreeBMD is still not a complete transcription of the civil registration indexes). As you can see, the marriage is the first entry, and then, by clicking on the page number, it gives you the other names with that reference, one of which is Mary Ann Forrest.

(As it happenes, the entry would be found on Ancestry, using an exact search for his full name, or you could use Parry in the surname and then Valentine either in the first name in the initial search page, or as a keyword in the advanced search page - although that method starts to bring up results where Valentine is a place name instead)

If you want the marriage certificate (which, if you don't already know William's father's name, would be worth getting) then you can order it through the General Register office at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ .

I hope all that makes sense. Have you found William in any of the censuses?

Barbara
