After the coal was removed from underground, it was taken to the breaker where
it was separated from the rock and slate. The breaker boys sat on planks and
coal would pour down the chutes and the boys would separate out the rock and
slate. Many of the breaker boys were just that -- boys. Some as young as 8
years old. As they got older, they might "graduate" into miners. Some of the
older men and others who were not able to work in the mines would also work in
