Subject: [PASCHUYL-L] HILLOCK in Shenandoah Valley (Where is this?)
Date: Wed, 3 Mar 1999 18:18:52 -0500

Hi,

I'm looking for information on Austin HILLOCK (born about 1856) and his wife
Mary CHRISTOFF (born about 1865). They came from (take your pick) Germany,
"Aust.Russian", Austria, or Budapest around 1884-1886. Austin may also have
gone by the name Peter CHRISTOFF/CHRISTOF/CHRISTOLPH.

Their oldest (surviving) son was Nicholas Michael HILLOCK, born 28 November
1890, in "Shenandoah Valley, Schuylkill County, PA" (taken from his marriage
license).

The second son was Michael HILLOCK, born in September 1892 in Syracuse, NY,
so the family was not in PA very long.
The other sons, born in Buffalo, NY, are John, Joseph, Peter, Andrew, and
Austin, Jr.

Unfortunately, there are no birth certificates before 1893, I have been
told. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to get any information on
this family in PA?

I am not sure of their religious affiliation. The family church in Buffalo
was apparently Russian Orthodox, though some records have been found for
Austin & Mary's children at local Roman Catholic churches.

Austin and his sons all worked for the railroad in Buffalo, so I assume they
did the same in Pennsylvania. Can this help?

Another question - is there such a town as Shenandoah Valley? If I was going
to start checking church records, I wouldn't know where to start. Was this
perhaps just a region, and not a specific place? What part of the county
would this have been?

Sorry to be so clueless. :) I really appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

Rene' Nilsson
