Hi Holly and List,

To my knowledge there wasn't a draft until later in the war (about mid-1863 if I
recall correctly) thus there wasn't any requirement as to registering or signing
up in county of residence.

The men were proud of the title that the PA units bore- being the Pennsylvania
Volunteer Infantry.

Five of my great-grand uncles of the SHAFER line served in various PA units and
although all lived in Luzerne Co. at the time of their enlistment they enlisted
in such counties as Monroe, Luzerne, Schuylkill, and Northhampton.

I'm not sure if later units that were composed of some or mostly conscripts
continued to bear that title but I do know that at least through the 153rd. it
was still volunteers. I only stop at the 153rd. as that's the highest numbered
regiment in which one of my ancestors served and with which I'm familiar.

Best Regards,

Michael Shafer

|Hi all,
|Why would that be? Weren't they legally obligated to sign up where they

|Thanks for any info.
