Found Charles KANE living in the home of James and Martha KAINE in East Norwegian Township, Schuylkill County in the 1850 census.
James KAINE, born about 1824 in PA, stone mason
Martha, born about 1826, in PA
George, born about 1846 in PA
Charles, born 1848 in PA
According to the missing James in the 1860 census, James is presumed dead between 1850 and 1860.

According to Charles' enlistment papers, where Charles HILBERT is his guardian, dated 27 Jan 1865. The last census Martha was in, the 1860, was dated 25 June 1860.
that gives me a window for death of 25 June 1860 and 27 Jan 1865. Not quite five years. Yahoo!

George and Charles served in the Civil War. Records have been requested.
In 1876, they both enlisted in the Co H. of the Mt. Carmel Rifles PA National Guard unit. Unit Disbanded in June 1876.
George stayed in Mount Carmel. No death date or burial location as of yet.
Charles was in Packer Twp, Carbon County by 1880. Stayed in Carbon County, settling in Mauch Chunk (known as Jim Thorpe today).
