James, Father Fanti at St John's is usually too busy to check individual
cemetery burials. He runs the parish all by himself, so has many other
duties as you can imagine. His rectory clerk may only be part time...and am
not sure they have a computer, either. However, they are more than happy to
do something for you if they have the time. Father is a genealogy buff also.
He's a joy to speak with and when I saw him last he was trying to upgrade
the Laurel Hill cemetery grounds and make sure gravestones were not being
cracked or mutilated with the mowing that is done. The cemetery is perpetual
care...which means the parish church handles all the physical upkeep,
including records. It is a beautiful place. Maybe you will be able to visit
sometime and check on those family burials you wanted. I would try again
though,by phone or letter to see if any one can help you.
As for the Historical Society..to which one do you refer?
The Susquehanna Depot Historical Socieity is located in the town shopping
plaza...site of the old RR works. I don't believe they have a computer..and
don't think they have cemetery records, but I could be wrong..it's been a
while since my last visit. Last year they were only open on Sunday
afternoons. The Susquehanna (County) Historical Society is located in
Montrose...(just a short drive from Susqy town) and they are open all week.
They may have some cemetery records. Don't have their phone number at hand
but information could give it to you. There are on Monument Square in
Montrose PA, in building with the library. The library number is the one you
want, then they transfer your call.
