The Samuel (Squire) Pate House North of Highway 334 east of Hawesville, KY,
was build of hewn logs in 1822. In 1827 Abraham Lincoln argued his first
law case here when he was charged with illegally operating a ferry on the
Ohio River. Squire Pate, who presided at the trial, was impressed with
young Lincoln and convinced him he should be a lawyer. Pate is buried
beyond the house.
