John,
Thanks for the info, particularly the passenger information. I recently
bought Salter's History and finished reading it this week. I found some
great information but will need a lot more before I am done. I spent a lot
of time in Monmouth County back in the 70's. Although I was there on
business, it is a shame I didn't know the family link so that I could do
some research then. I have so many sites to visit I hope I get the
opportunity some day.
I am not surprised that you did not find Pattersons in the graveyard there.
I suspect that Edward was Quaker as were most of the others who settled
there at that time. The colony was set up to provide a place for the
quakers from Mass and RI who were suffering from religious persecution.
Don't know how long they stayed Quaker but my Washington Co. Ancestor
(Robert b. 1749) was a Baptist.

Jack,
In September 97 I visited the graveyards in Freehold, NJ looking for
Pattersons. There were no Pattersons in the 3 old Presbyterian
Graveyards. Most of the Pattersons are in Adelphia, the township south
of Freehold; but the proprieter in Old Tennent Cemetery had a book:
The History of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, by Edwin Salter 1890. I had
always kept notes on Edward Patterson as he is the earliest Patterson
immigrant in my records.
Here is what it said:
(1) Oath of Allegiance take by the inhabitants of Navesink in 1668 to
the King and fidelity to the Lords Proprietors. And the oath is you and
any of you will bare, &c. Singed by Edward Patterson and others (page
360)
(2) Page xviii says that Edward was from Newport, RI. Settled during the
founding of Rehoboth, Mass. and was one of the first settlers in
Freehold, NJ. He and many others moved, or were asked to move by the
Puritans of New England.
I also have a passenger list: Pagginger Wch Passed From Ye Port of
London. 16 Marcij 1634. Theis vnder-written names are to be tranported
to New-England imbarqued in ye Christian de Lo: Jo: White. Mr bound
thither, the Men have taken ye oather of Allegeance Supremacie - Edward
Patteson 33.

I recently tracked my Washington county Patterson's back to Monmouth Co.
N.J. and I think I have found a tie in there. If so, there was an
Edward Pattison who settled in Monmouth in 1667. Looks like he arrived
there from Massachusetts where he was known as early as 1642. I am
hoping I can tie this all up soon but info comes at its own pace.
