With a name like Patterson its probably a good idea to check the UK,
including Scotland and Ireland...which have separate mailing lists and
websites--and Sweden.
If you have not checked the Immigrant Ship Transcriber's Guild (on Rootsweb)
lately then I would do that too because they just updated the webpage on
9/3/2000.

All of this is available through the Rootsweb webpage, or via GenForum.
Then when you get a crust or a bone to chew on my favorite (thorough) search
engine is
http://www.google.com
because when you get 4 Million results for Patterson in Ireland then you can
go to the bottom of the page and "search within results" (for example) for
"Co. Down"
and come up with a manageable number of webpages
and gedcoms.

But you should have at least gotten the person's death certificate before
you do this. Otherwise you are going to chase an inordinate number of
dead-ends and become
masochistic from slamming into brick walls.

The only situation that I can think where you can skip this step is where
there is a significant amount of family estate involved...in which case it
*may* be possible to "follow the money"...back to about 1850, but for
information prior to that date one would really have to have some solid,
accurate *facts* about the geography in order to make
any headway at all.
