Hello, I figured I would post to the list and see what some of you all make
of this, because it is confusing the heck out of me.

Let's start with the fact that there is no death record/certificate for
William B. Patterson, but I do have his obit and burial permit. I never heard
back again from Earl Patterson to see if William B. Patterson and his wife
Caroline are now buried at Bayview. I spoke with him last week and he was
going to look, but I haven't heard back. I don't have a birth record because
I have no idea where in Nova Scotia he was born (NS is listed on census
records as birthplace, thank you Candy!).

Obit reads: Capt. Wm. B. Patterson, who resided last year at Chapel Hill,
died last week at Manahawkin, N.J. from hemorrhage of the lungs. Mr.
Patterson was an old resident of the township and was 70 years of age at the
time of his death. He leaves a large family of grown-up children. His remains
were brought to the Navesink M.E. Church, where the funeral services were
conducted by the Rev. Chas. E. Hill on Saturday last. The interment was in
the graveyard adjoining the church.

(Now we all know this graveyard is a parking lot now!)

State of New Jersey - Permit of Burial (P56) reads:
County of Ocean
City: Mannahawkin, Sept 22, 1885
Job Edwards, undertaker this permit of burial for William B. Patterson aged
69 who died at Mannahawkin in the county of Ocean on Sept 20, 1885; the cause
of death cancerous affliction of stomach.
Place of Burial: Red Bank, Monmouth County.
Signed by John Letts-Assessor, Stafford Township, Mannahawkin.

Why would the cause of death and age be different? Also, could the reason be
for not finding the death cert. in Trenton be because he died in Ocean and
not Monmouth county, or does that matter?
