Dear Dave, Thanks for welcoming me to the list. My great great
grandparents, John Lafferty and Mary Leedom Lafferty, were farmers who
lived on Mingo Creek. They moved to Harrison County, Ohio in 1817. They
had eleven children, some born in Washington County and some born after
the move to Ohio. My great grandfather, Samuel Lafferty, was born in
1812. A generous person, another Lafferty, not related, sent me a
wonderful full page obituary of James Lafferty, the oldest of the eleven
children. This obituary has many clues in it. The first one was that the
family lived on Mingo Creek. On the Chartiers web site on cemeteries it
states that the congregation of settlers along Mingo Creek worshipped at
the Mingo Presbyterian Church and that the cemetery contains "on the
order of 1000 graves." Do you think the church has records that go back
that far on members and I wonder if anyone has a list of who is buried
in the cemetery.
My great frustration is that I cannot find the parents of John Lafferty.
I am able to trace Mary Leedom Lafferty back many generations.
Washington County does not have a record of their marriage.
I don't want to overwhelm with data so will stop at this point.
Thank you, Sharon Lafferty Strong
