Subject: Fayette county Alien Papers (and other places!)

I must add some clarifying statements to the following list that I posted
earlier to the Fayette list. It took me 2 hrs. not because I am such a
poor typist (grin!), but because of what I am trying to do. The papers are
handwritten sheets of paper, very few are "forms", which have been
microfilmed well. The material is an awful lot of legal jargon and
statements, in "anything goes" handwriting, and many with supporting
character statements from witnesses. I try to read through them to reduce
them to the basic salient points. You should try to obtain a photocopy
from the Prothonotary's Office in Fayette county, if you feel that one of
these are yours. Cite the name and index number, and any dates you can.
You should request all that is in the file for this action, so that you
can get the witness records as well. Scrutinize these, as they may well
give you more relative or in-laws names! [brother Hagerty's witnessed for
each other!]

The list is in the numerical order that the film started with, and I do not
know where the other 1-300+ records might be (I will try to find out), as
my film begins in the 400's, and for the immigrants seeking citizenship
post 1830's. The names of the petitioners will then be in random and not
alphabetical order. I am but at the very beginning of the list and the
dates do correspond to the 1830's when apparently a "uniform naturalization
code" was enacted for the United States. This occasioned many new and long
time residents of Fayette county, to seek formal citizenship. I believe
the order of procedure went from a Declaration of Intent, and or a Petition
which proved the residency requirement of about 5 years in the country, and
contained the statement that the person involved, renounced all former
allegiances and rulers. The cover sheet shows the name of the person,
index number, fee charged to record (usually $1), and then notes, such as
when the citizenship was granted, etc. These are great reading, and really
quite informative.

I am still looking for earlier naturalization records, as I know for a fact
that my ancestors were granted same in Fayette county around 1828. Perhaps
these will be on the latter part of the roll of film. Keep watching...more
names to come!

[Note: I begin the transcription of records here; more to follow as I can
get them done! The following took about 2 hours, so it is slow going!]
