RE: THOMAS PRATHER
Thomas Prather born 26 March 1756 Prince George Co., MD. died: 12 Aug.,
1841
Jackson Co., IN. (also lived in VA., N.C., S.C., and KY.)
He was born in Maryland and later moved to Mulberry Fields, N.C.
Enlisted 1776 at Will Courthouse, Mulberry Fields, N.C.
Private in Service; Capt. Clevelands Company, Col. Love's Regmt., Commanded
by
Capt. Christian; North Carolina Service.. served 2 years (24 months).
He also served under Capt. Reid, Col. Homes, Col. Armstrong, Col.
Rutherford,
Col. Locke, and Col. Brevard.
He served in the Rev.War (North Carolina line.)
Pension Claim #17032 ; Pension last paid 4 Mar., 1841; commenced on 4 Mar.,
1831; Certificate of PensiIssued 27 Aug., 1833.
His son Basil Prather, who married Mary "Polly" George, made a pension
claim,
due him, from his fathers service in the Rev.War in a pension claim
application 17 Nov., 1841. In this application he stated he had no
knowledge
of the existence of other heirs; one of them sometime resided in Indiana,
but
her residence at present is not known. If the balance is paid to him, he
will
account to the other heirs when he can ascertain where they are.
Thomas Prather; certificate #19351, Issued Aug., 27, 1833 received a
pension
of $80.oo per annum, to commence 4 Mar., 1831, under the Act of 7 June,
1832.
Jackson Co., IN. : Probate Court Record:
"Ordered that it be certified that Thomas Prather was a pensioner of the
United States at the rate of $80. per annum, was a resident of the county
of
Jacson in the state of Indiana, & died in said county on the 12 day of
Aug.,
1841.
In his pension application Thomas states:
He volunteered for service Sept., 1776 to continue during the war.
He joined the army under the command of Gen., Rutherford, Company of
Armstrong, Catp. Cleveland Commanding.
They marched to the Flowery Gap where they joined the Virginia troops.
They
crossed French Broad River then marched to the Tenn. River where they faced
Cherokee Indians. At that time there were 1500 me; they chose to destroy
the
Indians at Valleytown on the Hiwassee River. He was one of those chosen.
After performing the service of destroying the Indian villiages on the
Hiwassee, they returned to their army on the Tenn. River.
>From there they moved on to the Catawbva River, then on to King's Mountain
where they engaged in battle.
>From thence they marched to Redding River in N.C. where Thomas was
stationed
for 9 months to "guard the frontier."
Afterwards they rendezvoused at Catawba where they were later discharged.
15 Aug., 1785 in Botetourt Co., VA. he married Hanna Miles, daugher of
Samuel
Miles. (the Miles family are believed to have been of Cherokee descent ....
and the Miles family genealogy can be found in the book "Miles and Miles of
Miles".)
After the Rev. War, Thomas Prather moved to Smiths River, Henry Co., VA.
and lived there
until Oct., 1789. He then moved to Rutherfordton, N.C. then later to
Fleming Co., KY. around
1805. He remained in KY. until about 1817, when he moved to Jackson Co.,
IN.
Parents of Thomas Prather: Samuel Prather & Susannah Aldridge (Aldrich)
children of Thomas Prather & Hanna Miles: Dates indicate that Thomas and
Hannah may have had children before they were married.

Will of Thomas Sprigg Prater
In the name of God, Amen I Thomas Prater of Washington Co. & state of
Maryland
being weak in body, but of sound and perfect mind and memory, (thanks be to
God)
concerning the uncertainty of this mortal life, and that it is appointed
for all
men once to die, do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in
manner &
form following, (that is to say) first and principally I recommend my soul
to
the Almighty God that gave it, and my body to the dust to be deasonly
buried at
the discretion of my Executors hereafter named nothing doubting but that I
shall
receive the Soul again at the general Resurrection of all flesh, by the
mighty
power of God, and as touching my Wordly Estate, wherewith it has pleased
God to
bless me.
I give and bequeath in manner and form following-Imprimis.
First and principally I will that all my just debts and funeral charges be
paid.
Item. I give and bequeath to my sons Richard, Charles, and James Prather
ten
shillings common current money each, and no more.
Item. I give and bequeath to my daughters Mary, Elinor, Sarah, & Ann five
Shillings current money and no more.
Item. I give and bequeath to my son Basil one negro boy called Harry, him,
and
his heirs and assigns forever.
Item. I give and bequeath to my youngest son Thomas one negro boy named
Jack, to
him his assigns forever.
Item. I give and bequeath all the remaining part of my Estate, my wife's
third
Excepted, to my son's Basil and Thomas and daughter Elizabeth to be equally
divided amongst them.
Item. I do hereby appoint my beloved wife Jennet and my son Basil joint
Executors of this my last Will and Testament by me made, ratifying &
confirming
this only to be my last will and testament.
In witnes whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 24th day of
June
1783.

On the back of the will are the following endorsements to wit
Washington County, Sept 20, 1785 came Jennet Prather and Basil Prather and

oath that the within instrument of writing is the true and whole will and
Testament of Thomas Prather, late of said County, deceased, that hath come

their hands and possession & that they do not know of any other.
On the 27th day of Sept., 1785 came Jane Winters, & Thomas Brooke, two of
the
subscribing witnesses to the within last will & testament of the late
Thomas
Prather, late of said county, deceased.
