Jane, I don't have the answer to this fascinating question.
However, when I was back in Washington a month or so ago,
I stopped in at the Washington and Jefferson College library
and chatted with the reference librarian there. He was
knowledgeable of the history of the place. I'm sure that you
could call or write to him (to "Reference Librarian") with your
