The descendants of the late Benjamin Lindley will hold their
second annual reunion Thursday, August 9, at the home of Demas Lindley,
near
VanBuren. All members of the family are cordially invited to attend.
In an open field which forms part of one of the finest farms in
Ohio county, West Virginia, owned by Mrs. Ridgley, on the Wheeling, and
West
Liberty Pike, about a quarter of a mile from Clinton, is located the
grave of one of the most noted of the Indian fighters who was a terror
to the red skins well on to a century and a half ago--Major Samuel
McCullock. There are other graves as companions to that of McCullock,
said to be relatives and descendants of the intrepid pioneer. One has a
tombstone, but that of McCullock is marked by the stump of a locust that
sprouted over his grave, grew to large proportions and is now fast
disappearing. The stump is about 5 feet high and 4 feet in diameter. A
piece of the stump was secured by Joseph Noble and left with us.
Several times there have been suggestions made to have the spot marked
by a suitable monument, but as yet the locust stump--a fast decaying
mark--is the only monument of the grave. He was killed on July 30,
1772, 128 years ago next Monday.
End CLAYSVILLE RECORDER, FRIDAY, JULY 27, 1900.
