I understand you're feelings on this. I also understand the
logic of the person who noted in his database "died after" since
my mind works in a similar way and I make similar notations in
my database at home. Putting "died sometime after [pick a date]"
is a notation to me that the person was known to be living at least
up until that date and that I don't know when/if they died or if they are
in fact still living, especially if it is an elderly person. It's my way
of taking notes and trying to be accurate. I'm sure many people
have quirky ways of taking notes that could possibly in some way
be misconstrued by someone else.
I think the issue is this. The fellow published his notations in a public
forum and you took exception. He explained why he did what he did,
and you explained why you wanted it changed. I had this same thing
happen with relatives of mine when I published a genealogy on-line
(limited access only to family members).
When a distant and elderly cousin made herself known and asked
that I take off the "died sometime after", I did. It was a simple thing
to do to keep my family happy. I still use the notation in my own notes
at home, which I do not think is rude nor insensitive; they are my private
notes. HOWEVER, what I learned was that other folks are sensitive about
things that I might not be and I must respect that fact. If I publish
something for others to read, whether it is an article or a database,
then I must be sensitive and respectful of others.
My 2 cents,
