Esther M. (Karaffa) Bena
Uniontown
Esther M. (Karaffa) Bena, 70, of Uniontown, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, in
the Beverly Health Care Center, Uniontown. She was born March 24, 1930, in
Leisenring, a daughter of Peter and Anna (Uhal) Karaffa of Leisenring. She
was preceded in death by her father and her husband, Paul S. Bena, on July
12, 1977. Mrs. Bena was a member of St. Mary (Nativity) Roman Catholic Church
of Uniontown. In addition to her mother, she is survived by two children,
Paula M. and husband, Dr. Michael P. George, of Uniontown and Pamela A. Bena
of Pittsburgh; a granddaughter, Kendall M. George; a brother, Donald Karaffa
and wife, Mary, of Florida; and two sisters, Theresa and Elizabeth Karaffa,
both of Leisenring. Friends will be received in the HAKY FUNERAL HOME INC.,
139 W. Fayette St., Uniontown, today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday
until 10:30 a.m. when a blessing service will be held, followed by a Mass of
Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Mary (Nativity) R.C. Church. Interment
will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. Parish wake service at 8 p.m. today.
Charlotte R. Bischoff
Mt. Pleasant
Charlotte R. Bischoff, 89, of Mt. Pleasant, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, in
Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant. She was born April 1, 1911, in Mt. Pleasant, a
daughter of the late John Wesley and Fannie Sipe Barclay. Charlotte was a
member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Mt. Pleasant, and its Women of
E.L.C.A., Adult Fellowship and sang in the church choir for 50 years. Prior
to her retirement, she was an elementary school teacher in the Greensburg
Salem School District. She was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, Class
of 1928, and the former Indiana State Teachers College and the University of
Pittsburgh. In addition, she was a volunteer at the Frick Hospital, a member
of the Pa. Retired Teachers Association and Westmoreland County Retired
Teachers Association. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death
by her husband, Eugene Bischoff Jr., in 1948; and a sister, Doris Barclay, in
1972. She is survived by a son, Donald E. Bischoff and wife, Joyce, of Mt.
Pleasant; two granddaughters, Luanne Kerrigan and husband, Michael, of
Severna Park, Md., and Linda Polakovsky and husband, Edward, of Irwin; and
four great-grandchildren, Joseph and Jacob Kerrigan and Adam and Emily
Polakovsky. Friends will be received in the EUGENE G. SALOOM FUNERAL HOME
INC., Main Street, Mt. Pleasant, Sunday from noon to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A
prayer service will be held in the funeral home Monday at 10:30 a.m.,
followed by a funeral service to be celebrated at Good Shepherd Lutheran
Church at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Sherry A. Miller officiating. Interment will
follow in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be
sent to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 882 W. Main St., Mt. Pleasant, PA
15666.
Betty L. Deere
Penn Hills
Betty L. Deere, 75, of Penn Hills, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, in UPMC
Shadyside. She was born Jan. 3, 1925, in Greensburg, a daughter of Josephine
Gower Sarver Stitzer of Penn Hills and the late John L. Sarver. Betty was
Protestant by faith and was a veteran of World War II, having served as a
Medical Technician in the U.S. Army. She had worked as a L.P.N. at the former
Forbes Regional Hospital. In addition to her father, she was predeceased by a
brother, John L. Sarver Jr.; and a half brother, Edward Stitzer Sr. In
addition to her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Linda J. Deere of Penn
Hills; a son, Barry M. Deere and his wife, Charmaine, of Fort Walton Beach,
Fla.; two grandchildren; a great-grandson; and two brothers, Robert E. Sarver
and his wife, Alberta, of Wilkinsburg and Wesley D. Sarver and his wife,
Mary, of Miramar, Fla. There will be no public visitation and services are
private. BARNHART FUNERAL HOME, Greensburg, is in charge of arrangements.
George Danford Hershey
North Huntingdon
George Danford Hershey, 76, of North Huntingdon, died Thursday, Oct. 12,
2000, in Jeannette District Memorial Hospital. He was born Oct. 20, 1923, in
Elwood, Ind., a son of the late Charles D. and Minnie King Hershey. He was a
graduate of Clairton High School, Class of 1941, and attended the University
of Florida. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a millwright from the
Primary Mill Department of U.S. Steel, Duquesne Works, with 40 years of
service. He was a World War II veteran, having served in Europe as a
paratrooper sergeant with the 13th Airborne Division, 513th Signal Company.
He was a member of Manor American Legion Post 472, Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 781 and also assisted in the formation of the Police Athletic League,
where he coached and managed Little League baseball in Sunset Valley, and a
member of Christ United Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife of
over 53 years, Ruth Stokes Hershey; son, Thomas E. Hershey and his wife,
Joanne Bowler Hershey, of Greensburg; daughter, Virginia A. Toretti and
husband, Richard, of North Versailles; five grandchildren, Shelley, Scott and
Sara Toretti, Tara and Ryan Hershey; a sister, Martha Rough of Fort Myers,
Fla.; and brothers, Edward K. of Callery, Pa., and Charles W. of North
Huntingdon. Friends will be received at the SHIRLEY-KUKICH FUNERAL HOME INC.,
Clay Pike, Circleville, North Huntingdon, Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and
Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held Monday in
the funeral home chapel at a time to be announced. Interment will follow in
Mt. Vernon Cemetery.
Virginia Ann Kifer
Greensburg
Formerly of Penn Township
Virginia Ann Kifer, 55, of Greensburg RD, formerly of Penn Township,
Jeannette, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, in the Westmoreland Regional
Hospital, Greensburg. She was born in Greensburg, Sept. 27, 1945, a daughter
of Mrs. Jeannette (Jean) Blaze Kifer and her late father, William Abram
Kifer, who died in July 1996. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the
Advent, Jeannette. She was a registered nurse, where she had previously been
employed with the Department of Health for 20 years and was a graduate of
Citizens General Hospital, New Kensington. In addition to her mother, she is
survived by three brothers, Kenneth Kifer and his wife, Antonette, of Castle
Shannon, James Kifer and his wife, Natalie, of Gibsonia and Keith Kifer and
his wife, Darcia, of Bovard; five nieces; and a nephew. There will be no
public visitation. Private funeral services will be held in the LAWRENCE J.
McCLURE FUNERAL HOME, 112 N. Second St., Jeannette, Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
with Father Joseph Martin officiating. Private interment in Twin Valley
Memorial Park, Delmont. The family requests memorial contributions be made to
the American Diabetes Association, 300 Penn Center Blvd, Wilkinsburg, Pa., or
to the Episcopal Church of the Advent, Jeannette.
Emma Mae Clifford Ludy
Stahlstown
Emma Mae Clifford Ludy, 86, of Stahlstown RD1, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000,
in Latrobe Area Hospital. She was born Aug. 31, 1914, in Jeannette, a
daughter of the late Thomas and Effie Griffin Clifford. She was a member of
the Valley Brethren Church, Jones Mills. Emma was employed by Kennametal Lab,
Greensburg, prior to retirement. She was preceded in death by her first
husband, Gustave Myers; second husband, John Howard Bender; third husband,
Charles T. Ludy Sr.; two sons, Thomas Myers and Gus A. Myers; and two
sisters, Ruth Mollick and Minnie Shannon. She is survived by seven children,
Catherine and her husband, Eugene Muir, of New Florence RD1, Margaret Carns
of Ligonier, Gloria and her husband, Richard Gockel, of Greensburg, George
Myers of Jeannette, Judith and her husband, Raymond Henry, of Latrobe RD1,
Bernard Myers of Latrobe RD4 and Ralph E. Myers of Lake Charles, La.; two
stepsons, John and Charles Ludy; a brother, Leroy Clifford of Greensburg; a
dear friend, Anthony Moskel and his son, Philip; 32 grandchildren; and 41
great-grandchildren. Family will receive friends at the SNYDER FUNERAL HOME
INC. & CREMATORY, Bell and East Church streets, Ligonier, from 2 to 4 and 7
to 9 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the
chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Bill Yoder officiating. Interment
will be in Westmoreland County Memorial Park. Elizabeth Snyder Bloom, funeral
director/supervisor.
Mary A. Meyer
Coraopolis
Mary A. Meyer, 88, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at Mariner Health Care
Center of West Hills in Moon Township. Mary had been a resident of Coraopolis
until 1975 and formerly a resident at The Marian Hall Home. Born Sept. 30,
1912, in Pittsburgh, she was a daughter to Charles and Anna (Schultz) Meyer.
She was a member of St. Joseph Church in Coraopolis. She retired in 1977 as a
supervisor after 60 years of service to AT&T Phone Co. and was a member of
AT&T Pioneers. Surviving are her sister, Hilda A. Barcaskey of Moon Township;
also many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews. NO PUBLIC
VISITATION. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in St.
Catherine's Church in Wireton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may
be made to The Marian Hall Home, 934 Forest Ave., Bellevue, PA 15202.

Marian Marlene Estok Schank
North Huntingdon
Marian Marlene Estok Schank, 65, of North Huntingdon, died Wednesday, Oct.
11, 2000, in the Jeannette District Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 16,
1935, in McKeesport, a daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Dzavan Estok. She
was a charter member of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, North Huntingdon,
and one of the first lectors. She was a member of the First Catholic Slovak
Union (Jednota) Branch Holy Trinity #60 of McKeesport, the Ladies
Pennsylvania Slovak Catholic Union Branch #42, also a member of the Penns
Woods Civic Association, the Pittsburgh Slovakians and a former member of the
Norwin Band Aides. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a
sister, Dorothy Estok Morsey. Surviving are her husband of 43 years, Henry W.
Schank; a son, Reuben and his wife, Michelle Schank, of White Oak; two
daughters, Renee and her husband, Galen Piovesan, of Butler and Rachel and
her husband, Matthew Lewis, of Rostraver Township; five grandchildren,
Brianna, Lindsay, Mallory, Ross and Magnus; five nieces; and numerous
relatives in Slovakia. Friends will be received at the JOSEPH F. OTT FUNERAL
HOME INC., 504 Oak St., Irwin, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral
Mass will be celebrated Saturday at noon in the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
Church. Interment will follow in the Calvary Cemetery, Port Vue. Family
requests, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Arthritis Foundation, 1011 Old
Salem Road, Greensburg, PA 15601.
Victor D. Schworer
Latrobe
Victor D. Schworer, 86, of Latrobe RD1 (Lycippus), died Thursday, Oct. 12,
2000, at home. He was born June 24, 1914, in Greensburg, a son of the late
Joseph Sr. and Elizabeth (Miller) Schworer. Prior to retirement, he was a
tool and die maker at the former Robertshaw Controls Co., New Stanton. He was
a charter member of Possum Hollow Rod & Gun Club, social member of Whitney
VFD and American Legion Post #982, Pipetown. In addition to his parents, he
was preceded in death by his wife, N. Gertrude (Dick) Schworer; and a
brother, Henry Schworer. He is survived by his stepson, William H. Dick and
wife, Lois, of Latrobe RD1; four grandchildren, Kathleen Piper and husband,
Tim, who lived with Vic, Susan Piccolo and husband, Ralph, William Dick and
wife, Pam, and David Dick and wife, Laurie; 11 great-grandchildren; six
great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph Schworer Jr. of Jeannette and
Edward Schworer of Youngstown; two sisters, Lena Barbish of Adamsburg and
Mildred Black of Youngstown; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be
received at the GAUT-BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., Pleasant Unity, Saturday from 7
to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., where funeral services will
be held Monday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Mildred Monticue officiating.
Interment will follow in Lycippus Community Cemetery, Unity Township.

Middlecreek Township
Ruby Sheets, 85, of Middlecreek Township, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 11,
2000, at Patriot Manor in Somerset. Born Oct. 10, 1915, in Middlecreek
Township, she was a daughter of Harmer D. and Minnie Belle (Henry) Mognet.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Myers Sheets, in 1988;
sister, Thelma Mognet; and brother, Dwight Mognet. Surviving are a daughter,
Lois ``Louise'' Prentice of Springdale; son, Ethan (married to Virginia)
Sheets of Mt. Pleasant; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Also
survived by sisters, Irene Hostetler of Champion and Martha Countryman of
Pensacola, Fla.; and brother, Larry Mognet of Johnstown. She was a member of
Laurel Mountain Chapel in Rockwood. Friends will be received 7 to 9 p.m.
Friday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the MILLER FUNERAL HOME, 555
Tayman Ave., Somerset, where a service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday with the
Rev. Don Judy officiating. Interment Barron's Church Cemetery.
Mary Versino
Saltsburg
Mary Versino, 85, of Saltsburg, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, in Latrobe
Area Hospital. Born May 24, 1915, in Edri, Pa., she was a daughter of the
late Joseph and Clara Lanzatta Lanfrankie. At one time she resided in Foster,
but lived most of her life in Saltsburg. During World War II, she worked for
the railroad as a train stoker at the Avonmore Tipple. Prior to retiring in
the 1960s, she had been employed by Steiner's Manufacturing in Saltsburg. She
was a member of St. Matthew Roman Catholic Church in Saltsburg and the Fannie
Sellins Lodge #47, Avonmore. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in
death by her husband, Carlo Versino, in 1986; two sisters, Jean Pomposini and
Irma Hruska; and her stepmother, Modesta Vignali Lanfrankie. She is survived
by two daughters, Mrs. Lewis (Clara) Prenni of Saltsburg and Mrs. Leon (Erma)
Liesee of Groton, Conn.; a son, Victor Versino of Saltsburg; a sister,
Theresa Pomposini of Saltsburg; a brother, Michael Lanfrankie of Saltsburg;
four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Friends will be received
Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the CURRAN FUNERAL HOME, 701 Salt St.,
Saltsburg. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. from St.
Matthew Roman Catholic Church in Saltsburg with Father Gregory Flohr as
celebrant. Interment in St. Matthew Cemetery, Saltsburg.
