An article from the McDonald Record-Outlook, August 27, 1959. The big
winner, Frances Hospodar (who still sews beautifully) is my aunt by
marriage, and Victoria Hospodar was my grandmother. We're such a handy
bunch!
Victoria Hospodar Valentine
Two district women were big winners last week with their exhibits at the
Washington County Fair.
Mrs. Frances Hospodar of Valley Street Ext., R. D. 1, McDonald,
displayed her homemaking skills by winning six first-place awards while Mrs.
C. Hayes Pease of Hickory won five first-place ribbons and one second-place
award.
Mrs. Hospodar, competing for the first time in the fair, won five blue
ribbons in the sewing division for a cotton Sunday dress, a half apron, a
tailored dress, a man's shirt, and a boy's suit. She showed versatility by
capturing a first place with her berry pie entrant.
Mrs. Pease excelled in the flower arranging and cooking divisions. She
won first-place ribbons for her rolle sugar cookies, her oatmeal cookies,
and her biscuits, ad was given second place for her refrigerator cookies.
She won first-place awards for her display of six zinnias, and a table
arrangement of flowers.
Other district winners include Sophie Lutz of R. D. 3 McDonald, first
place for grape jelly and dark plums and a secondplace for display jellies;
Irk McConnell, Jr. of R. D. 3, McDonald, a junior department third-place
winner for his display of red tomatoes.
Eleanor Herriott, R. D. 4, McDonald, firt place for darn on sock, Linda
Herriot, R. D. 4, McDonald, second place, junior department cookies; Mrs.
Jack E. Nelson, R. D. 4, McDonald, second place for herenbroidered
pillowcase; Mrs. Victoria Hospodar of Valley St., McDonlad, second place,
quilt; and second place for a crocheted store.
Mrs. Edward With of R. D. 1, Hickory, first place, girl's dress;
Jeanette Gorney, R. D. 1, Hickory, first place for double African violet,
and Carol Ann Carter, Hickory, first place, cookies, junior department, and
second place, flower arrangement.
