for background on this published Letter to the Editor I wrote below.
Basically, the Univ. Prez wants to rename the 150 yr old California Univ
after a rich benefactor without debate and based on ridiculous premises. I'm
not an alumni of this university, but damn, there should be REAL pressing
issues to change the historic name of any landmark, not the highest bidder.
----------------------------------
Only $6 million?

Dr. Armenti said California University's name is confusing because some
people believe it is located in the state of California. He said the name
change proposal is a result of years of discussions, marketing studies and
the 2000 census that indicates the death rate in the region is higher than
the birth rate.

What am I missing here? Potential college students don't know where
California, Pa., is? Hope they aren't geography students. More people are
dying than living and so we need to change the college's name? Enrollment is
increasing and record funds are being raised and we need to change the name?
And who got rich off those "years of marketing studies?" It only takes $6
million to buy a university? I would have thought at least $10 million.
