October 30, 1897
C. CANONGE of Primrose was crushed about the breast and shoulders by a fall
of "blackjack" in the Jumbo mine. He had finished cutting his coal when the
blackjack, which is above the coal, came down on him.
James WILLIAMS of Midway had a foot smashed by a fall of slate in the Junbo
mine.
The row of frame buildings in Oakdale near the depot was entirely burned
except the Richards restaurant and two small buildings next to it, toward
the bridge.
A great organ and song recital will be held next week in the Presbyterian
church when the new $2,500 organ, presented by Edward MCDONALD will be put
in use. Most noted musicians will be there.

October 26, 1907
Mrs. J. S. MCCARTY of Fourth street tripped on a plank in the cellar and
broke her left arm near the elbow.
It can easily be said that Raccoon is one of the business centers of the
county. It contains eight buildings, five of which are grocery stores, one a
butcher shop, one a school building, and the other a railroad station.
A party of McDonald folk returning from a visit to Cherry Valley were
treated to an unexpected shower bath, which necessitated the burying of all
their clothes.
John JOHNSTON, an employee of Tillinghast's, fell from the roof of the
shop, landed in the creek, and escaped serious injury.

October 25, 1912
Danton MONJOT left for Montreal, Canada, where he will attend school.
Ralph BRADY, who left McDonald two weeks ago for the Southwest, has a
position with a copper mining company at Hurley, N. M.
B. A. PEACOCK of Mt. Pleasant township, the auctioneer, was in tow on his
way to cry a sale in Cecil. He reports that he has a sale billed for every
week day from now until November 8.
Canonsburg has ended a whirlwind campaign for its hospital, during which
over $17,000 was raised, $2,000 over the amount set at the inception of the
campaign.
G. W. AIKEN of New Castle, who voted for Abraham LINCOLN for president,
visited recently with Dr. W. R. DICKSON, West Lincoln avenue.

October 26, 1917
Paul MCBETH, an ensign on the battleship Des Moines, was home on a five-day
furlough. Herman FUTTERMAN of the battleship San Diego is home for nine
days.
Charles RODGERS of Laurel hill had the misfortune to get his foot crushed
in te Jumbo mine
When a noise was heard among Mrs. J. E. SMYERS' chickens, Mack SMYERS
started out with a gun, suspecting chicken thieves. He found a large
opossum had killed and devoured three chickens. He shot the opossum.

October 27, 1922
Dwight W. SHUPE was elected manager of the boys' high school basketball
team. Miss Corabelle CHAMBON was chosen to manage the girls' team.
The aged John A. HUNTER has been bedfast in his home in West Lincoln
avenue. He was struck by a motorcycle at Campbell's corner opposite the
First National bank. Mr. HUNTER, who will be 87 years old next January,
suffeed no broken bones.
Twenty-nine rural schools in Washington county have been closed in the past
few years through the consolidation of township schools.
Mrs. Ansel DAYE died October 25 in her home in Valley street.

October 27, 1927
Frank A. LOVELAND was called to Bradford where his son, H. W. LOVELAND,
assistant cashier of the Bradford National bank, is in a critical condition
suffering from pneumonia.
Mr. and Mrs. J. T. O'BRIEN of Arlington heights entertained a number of
relatives and friends at a six-o'clock wedding anniversary of Mrs. O'BRIEN's
parents, the Charles MEISERS.
John DAUDET of Midway suffered a broken leg while at work in his mine. He
was removed to the Allegheny General hospital.
The Rev. Edmund E. ROBB, D. D. for the past seven years pastor of the First
U. P. Church, Philadelphia, has accepted a call to the Central Presbyterian
church, McKeesport. Dr. ROBB is a native of McDonald.
Ten Years Ago
October 28, 1932
Virginia NUGENT of Cecil broke her right arm while playing basketball at
the Cecil grade school. The same arm was fractured last fall at mushball.
An attempt was made to rob the Oakdale post office. A hole had been made
large enough to admit an arm to open the door. It is thought that milkmen,
starting on their route from an adjacent building, frustrated the attempt.
Louis GARRETT of Noblestown was injured when the motorcycle on which he was
riding ran into the Primrose station. GARRETT had accompanied Joseph P. KAY
of Pittsburgh to Avella, where they delivered the Pittsburgh newspapers.
Upon returning, KAY failed to make the turn at the crossing and hit the
station.
Five Years Ago
October 29, 1937
Miss Edna WINDSHEIMER has received her diploma and school pin from the
Allegheny General Hospital School of Nursing.
Following an explosion of an oil stove, the home of Mrs. Grace HANCOCK near
Ligonier was damaged to the extent of $35,000. Six prizewinning Pomeranian
dogs, one valued at $1,000, were also burned. Mrs. HANCOCK is a daughter of
the J. Q. FLICKS of Coal street.
A chicken dinner was held October 26 in the Scout cabin in honor of the
Eagle scouts. The ones so honored and the number of their merit badges are:
Lloyd UFFELMAN, 31; Wayne UFFELMAN, 27; Paul DESCUTNER, 26; Thomas UFFELMAN,
26; Curtis MCELHANEY, 21; William YOURD, 21.
Miss Vine SPRUNG of Midway fell down a flight of stairs and broke an arm in
three places.
Mat HORNER of Cecil was painfully injured when struck by a car. He is in
the Canonsburg hospital.
Deaths-Richard LEE, 52, of Muse, Mrs. Oliver RICHELL, 55, of McDonald;
William K. GEORGE of Lisbon, Ohio.
