I agree with Carol on the talk talk talk of the courthouse
employees. I stood at the counter for over 10 minutes
while they gabbed - and yes - they were well aware that
I was standing there. In another department one woman
went beyond rude and straight to insulting. Just remember
that it's not you personally, they treat everyone badly. Don't
leave without the records you want!
If you go to Washington Cemetery, make sure you stop at
the office. The place is HUGE and you will never find your
people without a map. They will also look up records for you
in person if you are polite about it that they charge for by mail.
Lastly, go to the Union Bar and Grill. I't around the corner
from the courthouse, and you go down some steps from
the street to get in. I don't know the history of the place,
but it's ancient, and there are terrific, historical works of
art on the walls. Anybody can direct you there. I never
leave town without stopping for a Yung-ling (sp?) draft
and a steak salad.
Good luck and happy hunting!
Beth
