Subject: [WASH] Mrs. YOUNG shot Sept. 28, 1918 McDonald PA Outlook
Date: Sun, 1 Feb 2004 08:44:45 -0500

Mrs. Byrdie YOUNG, aged 28 years, wife of Frank YOUNG, colored, of McDonald,
was shot an killed last Saturday, just before noon, at her home on the
Southside, McDonald, by Forest WINSTON, colored. The woman was killed
instantly. WINSTON left the YOUNG home, went to his room in a house
adjoining, and there shot himself through the head. He died about 5:30 o'
clock Saturday evening.
An investigation of the facts elicited the information that WINSTON was
infatuated with Mrs. YOUNG and had been forcing his attentions upon her for
some time. These attentions, it seems were not resented to any extent by
Mrs. YUNG. It is thought she gave WINSTON some encouragements.
Saturday morning WINSTON went to the YOUNG home. Mrs. YOUNG was baking and
getting ready for dinner. No one was there and no one saw the shooting.
What passed between the two will never be known. When WINSTON was seen
leaving his boarding house he was carrying a hatchet. This hatchet was
found on the floor of the YOUNG home. Mrs. YOUNG had been shot in the right
side, the bullet taking and upward and diagonal course and going directly
through the heart. A post mortem examination showed this.
WINSTON, after going to his room, shot himself through the head. The
bullet entered the brain. He was rendered unconscious, but did not die
until 5:30 o'clock Saturday night.
The dead woman was the wife of Frank YOUNG, who is employed at the Aetna
Chemical company plant at Oakdale. They have two small children. WINSTON
was employed as a laborer for the Pennsylvania Railroad company. A coroner'
s inquest was held Monday and it was found that Mrs.YOUNG came to her death
from a bullet wound from a gun in the hands of WINSTON and that WINSTON died
from a bullet wound from a gun in his own hands, said wound being
self-inflicted.
