Shirley Eugene SPROWLS, 82, of Coal Center, Pa., died Wednesday, November 7, 2001, in Monongahela Valley Hospital Inc., Carroll Township, Washington County, Pa.
He was born December 23, 1919, in Bentleyville, Pa., son of Shirley M. Sprowls and Eldora Deems Sprowls.
He retired in 1985 from Peoples Gas Company with 41 years three months service.
He served with the United States Army during World War II in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre, was a Driver for General George C. Patton, and the recipient of the Purple Heart for wounds received on June 10, 1944, in France.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Bentleyville since January 5, 1936.
He was also a member of West Pike Run Grange, XYZ Club, Washington County Pomona Grange, Pennsylvania State Grange, National Grange, and Centerville American Legion.
On November 24, 1945, he married Marie Morris Sprowls, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Laurrie E. Sprowls, and daughter-in-law, Dolores, of Charleroi, Pa.; one brother James Wilbur Sprowls and his wife, Cora, of Coal Center, Pa.; three grandchildren: Mary Carol Zbyl, Christina Marie Sprowls, and Thomas Justin Sprowls; and four great grandchildren: Kristen Zbyl, Brooke Zbyl, Brandon Zbyl and Ashley Prati.
The Family will receive Friends in the GREENLEE FUNERAL HOME, 2830 Main Street, Route 40, Beallsville, Pa.; today from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and Saturday, November 10, until 2 p.m., the hour of Service with Rev. Joseph Hunter officiating.
Interment will follow in Maple Greek Cemetery where Full Military Honors will be accorded by Centerville American Legion Post 705.
