Where and What We Are
McDonald is 10,000 people within a mile of a post office that is in a
200-acre incorporation with about 3,000 people inside of it-eighteen miles
directly west of Pittsburgh, on the main Panhandle line, with a train each
way every hour in the day, round trip fare to the city 45 cents.
The Robinson Valley is 14 miles long-from Bulger tunnel to Carnegie. The
upper . Midway, Primrose, McDonald, Sturgeon, Noblestown, Oakdale post
offices; and this upper valley has 20,000 people. Churches and schools are
as good as the best in the world. The people are from all parts of the
world, most of them owning their own homes. This is the greatest oil field
the world ever saw, 3,000 to 4,000 coal miners live hereabouts. McDonald is
brick-paved, electric-lighted, and perfectly watered by pipes along every
street. $15,000 to $30,000 brick blocks are not uncommon. All trades and
professions and all kinds of legitimate business flourish. There are
numerous machine shops, boiler shops and factories of various kinds,
including a glass house. Ours is no country village, but a city in all
respects. We have a good classical academy. Almost every society (of any
merit) in the world is represented. People are intelligent, and most, and
most of our businessmen are young men. There are two National Banks.
