Hello to any ROUGHT historians lurking,
As you know, family tradition (at least in some parts of the family) has it
that three brothers (Leonard, George and Jacob) came to the Nicholson area
sometime around 1800. There is certainly some evidence to support this in
the census records from 1800 on as well as some tax lists. There are at
least two schools of thought about who their father was.
One group believes that Henry (Hendrick) was the father. There is, as far
as I know, no evidence to support this but there was, at least, a Henry
Rought who was in the Dauphin County militia in 1794. Of course, there was
also a Daniel Rought in the 1790 census in New London, Connecticut, which
was a port of entry. There is nothing to tie him in either, as far as I
know.
The other school of thought believes that Nathan Rought was the father.
They also seem to substitute Leonard Rought with the Nathan who settled in
Wyoming Co.
I finally found the "documentation" I was given supporting Nathan Rought and
it is really flimsy. When you and others on this list look it over, you'll
see why I think it is bogus. Among other things, why is there no
documentation (other than what follows) anywhere for anyone named Nathan
Rought in the 1700-1800's? What are the odds of so many children being born
on the same date (March 14)? I could go on, but you get the drift.
The person who sent the information to me said, "The following data was
reportedly read to a family member by one of my grand aunts from a bible
passed along to her. She would not let anyone borrow it. It was supposedly
lost in a house fire in central Michigan in the 1930's."
Here is the grand aunt's statement:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
'History as given to me. 3 German or Holland brothers were sent here by
their father, from Amsterdam. Each one was given an allowance. On board
ship one died. The other two landed in Boston, Mass. In a short time on
was taken sick and died. The one left whose name was Nathan, settled in
Wyoming Co., Pa. He was the 6th generation back.
He and his wife had 5 sons, one of these sons was named Nathan Rought after
his father. And these are the names of Nathan Rought Jr. and his wife's
children: Nathan Jr. Rought, Lenard Rought, George Rought, Mary Ann Rought,
Phebe Rought, Washington Rought, Ebenzer Rought, Sylvester Rought. These
were nine in all and the second generation.
The third generation sons and daughters of Nathan Jr. Rought and wife's:
James Rought born Jan 15; Lenard Rought born March 14; Jacob Rought born May
15; Abagal Rought born March 6; George Rought born Aug 12; Sarah Rought born
March 14; Benjamin Rought born March 14; Sylvester L. Rought born April 16,
1827; Washington Leroy Rought born April 16, 1827; Rhuma Rought born March
14; Ebenezer Rought born March 14; Mary Ann Rought born March 14.'

I would be interested in hearing comments from any and all ROUGHT
historians
on this list.
