I have no connection to the Smith genealogy but am compiling a booklet about former rural and early teachers once of Elk and several nearby counties. Laun Cummins Smith was listed as a the Principal of the Spring Creek High School located in Portland Mills, Pa for the years 1917-1918-1919-1920 and possibly until about 1923-24. Portland Mills was located in a rural area of Elk County. Some time after the mid 1900's he moved away possibly to Waynesboro, Pa where he died March 14, 1972. I would like to locate a copy of his obit. which might give me the name of the Normal school and/or college he graduated from and the year he graduated. I would also like to find out if he continued to teach school, if so, where he taught after leaving Elk County. It's probably too much to hope to find a picture of him in his college or early years of teaching. His first wife was Leah Bryan who died in 1915 apparently several days after the birth of a son who passed three days before her. H!
is second wife was Bertha Bernice Deibler, also at the time a resident of Hallton, Spring Creek Twp., daughter of William and Maude Matilda (nee Hoover) Deibler. Bertha was born in 1903 in Elk county and died 1972 in York, Pa. Any and all information will be greatly appreciated.
