enlisted with the United States Navy at Portsmouth, NH Oct 05, 1917. During
WWI, he served on the USS Southery from Oct 05, 1917 to Sep 24, 1918. The
Southery was a 3100 ton collier built 1889 at Sunderland, England for
commercial use, purchased by the US Navy Apr 1898 to carry coal in the
western Atlantic and Caribbean areas until Feb 1899, when she was converted
to a prison ship. She was decommissioned in Jul 1933. Ivan also served on
the USS Lake Beidan from Sep 27, 1918 to Nov 11, 1918. He was discharged Sep
04, 1919 at Boston, MA
