Once you start with a genealogy program you are very likely to stick
with it. However transferring your work from one program to another is
not that diffficult. Most people go from a simpler program such as PAF
to a more featured program such as The Master Genealogist. TMG will
import directly from most other popular programs but can do a GEDCOM
imprt as well.
Check out Dave Uther's point 10 "does a user group exist on-line,
Company support". If you are seriously thinking about an expensive
program, join the users list for the program and see what support users
get from other users and the company.
One of the big complaints about FTW on the list or newsgroup GENCMP was
the coast of having to buy a new upgrade even to fix bugs. Other
programs often offer free upgrades with an upgrade charge only when
major new features come out.
As I said answer Dave Uthe's questions and look at the various web sites
