Subject: [PEI] An Island Register Christmas Present

Hi Everyone, and Merry Christmas:

A Christmas Present from the Island Register:

There has been a lot going on "behind the scenes" this week! I am
in the midst of a major project right now that is being unveiled
today - the digitization of the 1863 Lake Map, the first time this
map has been digitized, reprinted, and/or made available online. It
has been a dream of mine now for several years. Yes, it will be
extremely hard on web space, but I have recently added more, and
having the Lake Map available will be a help to many.

There are more recent maps available, the Meacham's 1880 Atlas,
and the Cummins 1928 Atlas, and these are widely available in
book form through the PEIMHF, but no one has reproduced the
Lake Map of 1863. With the Lake Map, used in combination with
these, one can follow a family through three generations, in many
cases.

This map is huge, close to 8x10 feet, and therefore cannot be
reproduced in one page. It contains useful pieces of information
superimposed onto the blank areas such as the 1861 Census
Summary, Proprietor's List, Parish List, and blown up maps and
Directories for a number of towns. As much as possible will be
brought to you.

This is all being made possible by Garth Bulman, who has a copy
of the map that has broken up through the years, and which is
ideal, due to its segmented nature for scanning. Each portion
shows who was occupying the land in that year. None of these
maps are in perfect shape - they were printed on canvas, and on all
I have seen, there are portions where the printed overlay is peeling.
There are some areas which will not be able to be recovered - I will
attempt to get copies of any missing segments from another copy
of the map when we have mined everything we can off Garth's.
Garth is doing transcriptions of text portions, and I am converting
these, and scans made by Garth into usable portions.

It will take some time to complete the project, but rather than
holding of till everything is complete, we will make all completed
portions accessible immediately for your use.

Currently maps for Lots 18, 19, 20, 22, 23, 24, 34, 35, 36, 48, and
50, plus maps for Charlottetown Royalty, Summerside, St.
Eleanors, Cornwall, Crapaud, Graham's Corner, Mt. Stewart,
Victoria, Wheatley River, Central Bedeque, Margate, Traveller's
Rest, Annandale, Bridgetown, Montague, Souris are online with
more going on each day. The 1861 Census Summary provided on
the map, Proprietor's List, and Parish list are also online. To view
the lot maps, click on Lot maps at the top of the page, and then on
the lot you wish to view. Those in blue are currently online.
