Subject: [PADutch] Is this a German surname? Rider/Reider and variants
Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2000 13:01:12 EDT
My Rider family name is allegedly of the Pennsylvania Dutch variety and I
have managed to be certain they were at one time in Pennsylvania. I'm stuck
at Wythe County Virginia where 4 (at least) Rider men from an as yet unknown
county in PA (in various records in Wythe these men assert they are from PA)
settled sometime in the 1800-1820 time frame. My ancestor is Isaac O. Rider
born abt 1804.
I have seen the name with several possible spellings: Reiter, Reider, Ryder,
and the Virginia accent version Rader (my dad kind of pronounces it so it
sounds like this). Can anyone out there share any possible German meaning
associated with this name? I believe Hoofnagle is also associated with my
family too but until I find the county they came from I can't say for sure.
Isaac and several others was a shoemaker/tailor and some of the others were
sadlers, butchers and printers and cabinet/coffin makers--most ran businesses
in their trade in Wythe.
Thanks,
Lisa Rider Shindlebower
