By the Way... I sent a message inquiring about the Kansas branch of the
family, but didn't get any response. ...

Susan:

I'm not sure what you're looking with regard to Kansas Penningtons; there
are probably several Pennington family groups of varied origins who settled
in Kansas. My Pennington ancestors descend from Andrew Jackson Pennington
(b.1824, Clay Co. KY; d.1900, Howard Co. IN), whose son, Elijah Winfield
Pennington (b. 1848, Indianapolis; d. 1928, Liberal, KS) migrated from
Indiana to SE Kansas after the Civil War. By the way, A.J. Pennington was
a Union officer who was imprisoned and escaped from the infamous Libby
Prison in Richmond, VA.

Elijah (who with brother Solomon Andrew Pennington) accompanied his father
to war, settled near Chetopa, LaBette Co., KS, in 1877, and later near
Welch, Craig Co., OK, before ending up in the "No Man's Land" of Beaver
Co., OK -- adjacent to Seward Co., KS.

Elijah's son (and my g-granddad), Armondo Braxton Pennington, (1882-1955),
farmed in Beaver/Seward counties until devastated by the Great Depression,
drought and dust storms. AB often told of his boyhood in NE Okla.,
frequently including a tale about selling a watermelon to a group of
horsemen en route to nearby Coffeyville, KS. Supposedly, one of the men
introduced himself as Emmet Dalton. The next day, Elijah loaded his family
into a wagon and drove to Coffeyville to see the still-warm bodies of the
Dalton gang, publically displayed after their failed robbery attempt.

For whatever it's worth, that's my condensed account of one Pennington
family group that settled in Kansas. And if anyone out there knows who
Andrew Jackson Pennington's parents are, I'll wash your car weekly for a
year if you let me know.

Namaste,

Gregory Leaming
