Here is all I know.

I know that Asa Pennington was in Lincoln County Tennessee in 1820. He was livingi next door to his son-in-law Elijah McGehee. Elijah married his daughter Sarah. I have Asa's pension record which indicates that Elijah had two brothers named John and Samuel. This indicates to us that Elijah might have been the son of William and Direna McGehee.

Also in Lincoln County Tenn in 1820 was James and Jane McGehee. They are not enumerated on the census, but other records indicate their presence there. James' two daughters Nancy and Elizabeth married two of Asa Pennington's sons. Nancy married Simeon Pennington and Elizabeth married Corbin Pennington. It is unclear whether they married in Lincoln Couty tennessee or if it was later in Knox County Illinois.

You can find a reproduction of a petition signed by Corbin and Simeon Pennington along with John McGehee (my great great grandfather - he was the son of James and Jane). This is also signed by Stephen, Riggs, and Wesely at http://www.angelfire.com/tx2/McGehee/petition.html

At some point prior to 1830 James and Jane moved to Illinois, showing up in the 1830 census of Morgan County first, and then in 1832 records indicate they were in Knox County. I have read one source that states because of indian attacks, that those living in the KNox County area moved south to the Morgan County and nearby areas for protection. So I dont know which place they went first.

James served in the war and was dicharged in late 1832. His wife remarried in Feb 1834 so we assume that he died. No further record of him has ever been found.

Jane's second marriage to Hayden Hilton did not last, although it produced one daughter, Sarah Jane Hilton.

By 1836 the entire family is moving south, I dont think they moved all together, but I know that in or around the mid 1830s, the all ended up in the same place, Lawrence County Mo (at that time it was Barry Couty still). This includes Simeon and Corbin Pennington.

Corbin and Elizabeth McGehee Pennington moved on to Texas, and settled around the Coryell Couty area (just one county west of Waco Texas). I have contact with one of their decendants.

Asa Pennington and Elijah McGehee can also be found in Lawrence Couty mo, but I dont know exactly when they came there or from where, Illinois or Tennessee? Asa Pennington died there, and I have been to his farm. Elijah also died there in Lawrence County. When my great great grandfather died the executor of his estate was his brother in law Simeon Pennington. I have Simeon Pennington's signature on paper if anyone would be interested in it.

Along with Elijah McGehee there was also a Eli McGehee in Lawrence County. He had come from Lincoln County Tennessee as well and according to his pension records he was Elijah McGehees nephew.

If anyone has info on these people, or knows anything about why they were where they were, or any info on James and Jane, or other McGehees here I would love to have it. We still have many mysteries to solve, such as who was Jane McGehee. Some have said her maiden name was Patterson.

Also, does anyone know where the name Carroll would have come into the McGehee-Pennington line?

Jack McGehee

Hi Katherine-
I thought I had something about Simeon Sylvester Pennington being
involved in the Black Hawk War. Sorry but I cannot find it. There was a
post some time back. Please check.
Simeon was the son of Asa. He was born 1808 in Lee Co., VA- This is
group #4- I show that he married a Myranda Lee- ? New Info?
The McGheehes and Penningtons were definitely close because Sarah (1797)
daughter of Asa, married Elijah McGeehe-
I show Riggs born August 28, 1787 in NC!-?
WHERE DID I GET THIS?
Simeon was the son of WHO?
The last conversation I had with the "Late Great" John Franch was about
Simeon (Group 16). He convinced me- but as far as I know he did not
follow up with the PRA. He was working on something else.
He was VERY definitely convinced that Simeon was Asa's twin brother born
August 28, 1775- AND the son of Timothy Group #4.
I wish I had more time, however I have two BRAT geniuses in college and
have to work 60 hours a week to keep them there!
Very best regards-
Mike Pennington
Group 16
