Dear Carmen,
I'm the Group Leader for Samuel's Group which is 12. I don't know his
father's name. His son Claiborn said in his Eastern Cherokee Application
that his father's mother was a Sizemore and died when Samuel was "quite a
boy". Claiborn also said that Samuel was bound out to a man named
"Randlow" in Powell's Valley. That appears to be maybe Lee or Scott
County, VA or even over into Hawkins Co.TN. I have not found a Randlow
in that area yet, but there was a John Randle who appears to have been
financially well-off. I have tried to tie Samuel into the Micajah clan
but he would have been likely to have had more siblings than just one
sister, as his son said in his ECA. Samuel was born in the early
1790's. His father did not have to be dead for Samuel to be bound out,
but it seems likely esp. with only the one sibling.
So we're looking for a Pennington who died about that time. According to
his son (and other descendents)'s ECA, Samuel was born in Grayson County,
VA.
Like you, I think Samuel is probably tied into Group 7 and I suspect
Group 32 also. That's the Wells Pennington Group.
I have a Samuel I am researching who shows up in the 1860 Census of
Russell County, KY, living next door to my 2nd Great-Grandfather, Arad
Pennington, probable son of Wells. This Samuel was married to a Nancy
who was 20 years younger. Family history for Group 12's Samuel says he
was believed to have moved away to TN after his wife died and that he had
remarried to a much younger woman. It would look really good except
Samuel's son and also a daughter, said that their father died in 1862.
This Samuel next door to my ancestor was alive at least until 1870.
As for Elisha "Dock" Pennington, he does look to be part of Group 12
since Mae Pennington, who got Group 12 started, remembered relatives
talking about her Uncle Dock. He was said to live apart from the rest of
his family and did not have much contact with them although living in the
same vicinity.
If anyone can add to this discussion, jump right on in.
