Regarding Adoption:
I never thought about it until you mentioned "you weren't blood!" What a
hurtful thing to say!
My sister is ten years older than me; I didn't know she was my half-sister
until I was about 15 and discovered her name written in a copy to the
"Bobsey Twins" we had. By then she was married, had a family of her own,
and lived back east. Mama told me about her first marriage at that time.
Shocked! Yes. But my sister was still my big sister; she will be till the
day one of us dies.
At the age of 49 she was "legally" adopted by our Dad; it was our dying
Mama's wish. They never had the money to adopt her when they first wed, but
she used his last name from that day on, never knowing the difference.
Attended school, entered the Air Force, married...always using Dad's name.
You should have seen the face on that lawyer when we all showed up in his
office, just before Mama died, as we watched the papers being signed. We
then took them right over to the hospital for Mama to read. She was finally
at peace with her "secret" made right. Think of what our future generations
will make out of that one?
