Hi Lise--
I enjoy identifying the sources of my information about my family line, and
am interested in finding new cousins.
First of all, several cousins who are in the DAR traced William PENNY
(1751-1821) from the PENNY family living in IL 1810 on--to the Wm living in
NC during the Revolutionary War; he served in a miitia unit as a Cavalry
Captain and was in some skirmishes following the British victory at Camden,
SC.
Mecklenberg Co. is an old county, and was later split into other counties;
Wm & Elizabeth owned land in the northern corner of Meck. Co., which later
became parts of Rowan and other counties. Records of land sales and
purchases for Wm & Elizabeth PENNY exist up to ca 1795. The PENNY family is
believed to have then moved to eastern TN (Jefferson Co.), then to central
TN (Smith or Sumner Co.) by 1709.
Census records then indicate a move into southern IL (Pope Co.) ca 1810,
corresponding to the time the Indians were being forced northward. By 1820
William & Elizabeth had moved to the Springfield, IL area. Wm died in 1821
and Elizabeth died in 1822. The DAR has a monument at the Pleasant Plains,
IL cemetery noting the war veterans buried there, including Wm.

Now returning to earlier times, I had a researcher hunt for the parents of
Wm PENNY (1751-1821), among all the other PENNY households in NC at the
time. The most likely parents were William & Eliza PENNY, probably
originating in PA. and following the popular migration path of the
Scot-Irish. The result of this is outlined below:
William PENNY (ca 1709 in N. Ireland?--1761 in NC)
m. Eliza ______ ca 1733. She died 9 Oct 1775 in Rowan Co., NC
Children were--
(A) Alexander b ca 1734 in Chester Co., PA) m. ca 1755 but unknown name of
spouse.
(B) Mary b ca 1736 in Chester Co., PA m. ca 1756 to _____MARTIN.
(C) Margaret b ca 1738 in Chester Co., PA m. ca 1762 to Archibald HOUSTON.
(D) John b ca 1742 in Chester Co., PA m. ca 1769 to Margaret _______.
(E) William b between 1746 and 1751 (most records indicate 1751) in Chester
Co., PA m. ca 1777 Elizabeth BARKLEY .
NOTE: A will of 1761 says little except that Wm's wife is Eliza. Then the
before-referenced will of 5 Jan 1775, citing the above children (A-E) and
grandchildren Rachel d. of Alexander, Margaret d. of Mary, Elizabeth &
Rachel ds of Margaret.
-------------------------------------
The children of Wm (1751-1821) and Elizabeth Barkley PENNY were:
(1) Robert (1779-1826) m. Louise Dorcas MC CREE in 1806.
(2) Ellender (1782-1858) m. John WITT in 1803.
(3) Margaret (1785-1816) m. James Armstrong WHITESIDE in 1803.
(4) John Barkley (1786-1836) m. Delilah BREWER in 1817 (2nd m. for him).
(5) Enoch (1787-?).
(6) Wm Bursby (1789-1865) m. Rebecca COMACK in 1819.
(7) Hiram (1790-1852) m. Catherine MC HENRY in 1814.
(8) Mary / Polly (1794-?) m. Hugh ROBERTSON in 1818 in Pope Co., IL.
NOTE: This is the Mary you say m. Joel DOSS in 1796. This is where I think
we may have different families.
(9) Solomon (1796--?) m. Ann RENSHAW, then Anna BERNARD.
That covers the information I have for these generations of PENNY.
