I am a distant cousin as my 5great grandmother was his great aunt--Elizabeth
Penny James. What I have on JC in my computer is very brief but I could
probably dig more out of my note books. I have more on his other aunts and
uncles and the BARRETT and STARKE lines of his grandparents goes back to
royal lines and eventually about 6 BC. Here is a brief ancestory on his
parents and grandparents. I will put it at the end of this message.

JAMES C. PENNY, SR., DEAD.
James C. Penney was born in Caldwell county, Mo., Dec. 29, 1841, and
died at his home in Hamilton, Mo.
March 22, 1895, after a lingering illness of some time. In 1862 he was
united in marriage to Miss Fannie Paxton of
Kentucky, who with six children survive to mourn his departure, their six
other children having gone before to the
land beyond. At the age of nineteen years Mr. Penney connected himself with
the "Old School" Baptists and was in
the ministry thirteen years. At a later day he adopted the views of the
missionary Baptists. He was one of the best
known citizens of the community, having spent the last fourteen years in
Hamilton. He was a friend and helper to
all that was progressive and good. He was known by those who were needy and
the afflicted found in him a friend.
In his going to his long home the family has lost a loving husband and
father, and the community has lost a good
citizen and friend. The funeral took place Sunday at 2:00 p.m. from the
family residence, services being conducted
by Rev. W. Bilbro and Rev. C.F. Spray.
The attendance was one of the largest ever witnessed in Hamilton,
friends being present from all parts of the
county.
The floral offerings were very fine being brought from St. Joseph by
Mr. Hans Neilson, the florist.
The family have the sympathy of the whole community in their sad
bereavement.

Died May 31, 1871, at Hamilton, Missouri. An account of his death, as
published in the "Signs of the Times,"
under date of July 15, 1871, is here quoted:
Died - At his residence, Elder Eli Penney, in the 73rd year of his age.
He was received into the followship of the church at Salt River, Anderson
County, Kentucky, when leevne years of
age, and was baptized by his father, Elder John Penney, and when thirty-four
years of age began to preach the
doctrine of salvation by grace, and continued faithful in the promulgation
of this most glorious truth until death,
though for some years past, racked and tortured by rheumatic pains, frail
and helpless almost as a child, he
preached but little. But when the trying hour came he admonished us to shed
no tears of sorrow over him, but to
rather let flow tears of joy that one more soul had gone to the embrace of
Jesus. How replete with consolation to
the bereft, together with all who fell their loss, is such an expression on
this most trying occasion.
"Jesus can make a dying bed
Feel soft as downy pillows are,
While on his breast I lean my head,
And breath my life out sweetly there."
These, together with many other beautiful lines, he marked, as fully
expressing his feelings. He died of a tumor
formed on the breast bone, from which he suffered the most excruciating
pain. He leaves a widow and nine
children, who feel his loss; for he is our refuge and our strength, a
present help in time of trouble. May we be
enabled to bow submissively to all his mandates, is my fervent prayer.
5. Mary BURRUS was born on 17 Sep 1802 in , Anderson(Mercer), Kentucky. She
died on 10 Dec 1875 in Hamilton, Caldwell, Missouri and was buried in

Mary, called Polly, Burris or Burrus, daughter of Edmund, Sr., and
Frances (Jones) Burris or Burrus, was born
September 17, 1802, in Mercer (now Anderson) County, Kentucky, and died in
Hamilton, Missouri, on December
10, 1875.
Her son, the Reverend James Cash Penney, wrote to the "Messenger of
Peace" a Primitive Baptist Church
journal published in Missouri during the latter half of the nineteenth
century, as follows:*
Hamilton, Mo. Jan. 27,
1876.
ELDER J.E. GOODSON - Dear Brother: My dear mother departed this life
December 10th, 1875. She was
born in Anderson county, Kentucky, in the year 1802, September 17, so she
attained the age of seventy-three years,
three months and twenty-three days. She united with the Regular Baptist
church when quite young and was
baptised by my grandfather, Elder John Penney. My father, Elder Eli Penney,
emigrated to Caldwell county,
Missouri, in 1841** and raised nine children. She was a member of the
church over fifty years and truly the
doctrine, by a pious walk and a well ordered conversation. The same blessed
Jesus who was her only hope through
life, cheered an (sic)+ animated her in death. She left incontestable
evidence of her acceptance with God, and as
long as she could speak most piteously called upon her blessed Lord.
Her children, many relations and a host of freinds are sadly bereft. But
thanks to God we mourn not as those who
have no hope. For we feel confident that our loss is her eternal gain. In
hope of eternal life, I remain your
unworthy brother.
J.C. Penney.
She entered into a marriage bond, September 25, 1820 with Eli Penney
and they were married by the Reverend
John Penney in July, 1821 as recorded in Mercer County, Kentucky, Marriage
Records, Book I, at Harrodsburg.
*It is interesting to note here that the Primitive Baptist preachers then
called themselves "Elder" and not "Reverend."
**The correct date of migration of Elder Eli Penney to Caldwell County,
Missouri, was 1839.
+Where (sic) is used, word is spelled as in original record.
