Subject: [PERSONAL-HISTORIAN-USERS] Whadda List!!
Date: Sat, 22 Sep 2007 15:45:19 -0700
This mail list has to be the weirdest list in all of the Internet. It
concerns a non-existent product (for Windows Vista). There are people
who complain about that. And there are people who lurk, complain about
the complainers, and otherwise contribute nothing else.
This current thread has already been played out by a similar thread last
June. However, this thread was initiated by a bogus e-mail from the
"The RootsMagic Forums team" on 9/19/2007 which stated that
rwcrooks has just posted a reply to a topic that you have
subscribed to titled "Is Personal Historian dead?"
I found no such reply. Instead others began writing including Daniel
Harrngton (you are right, Dan) who was then accused by one of the
lurkers, Carleene for "flaming". You'd better get your facts right,
Carleene. Harrington did not flame and, furthermore, Bruce is not in
charge of Personal-Historian.
Actually, Bruce wrote a misleading reply dated 9/21/2007 which said in
part, "[PH is] requiring a complete rewrite of the program to support
many of the features which have been requested.." Folks! If all that
was required was for PH to wrap text around pictures then a complete
rewrite would not be needed.
I, for those of you interested, have insight into the problems
confronting Personal Historian. I was e-mailed by the developer,
Michael Booth, concerning the problem and it is, indeed, a thorny
issue. When Windows Vista was finally released in late Jan 07, it was
found that something called MDAC was completely different from previous
Windows versions. From the Microsoft site, "MDAC stands for Microsoft
Data Access Components. It is a widely used Windows system component
that implements database connectivity features. MDAC is required by many
Windows programs that implement database features."
So happens that PH had been using the earlier versions of Windows data
access features but when WinVista came out, PH wouldn't work.
So, I say, get ready for a long wait. Rewriting for WinVista ain't a
walk in the park. My bank, Citibank, had some credit card features that
didn't work in WinVista. They have a note saying they will have a
version compatible with Windows Vista "shortly". That note appeared in
February 07, and, let's see, it's Sep....no Vista compatibility yet.
