Thanks to Dulcie (and others), I have now been able to determine (from this
map) that the town of Thornhill (Scotland) is approximately 45 miles
south-west from the harbor town of Perth (Scotland), or about 10 miles due
west of Dunblane. This would place Thornhill within the borders of county
Perthshire.

Is the word "parish" synonymous with "county"? I have always thought that
"parish" was just another name for "church". Oh well, this information
corresponds well with the written genealogy of my ancestor, William WISHART,
who was born in Thornhill parish in county Perthshire on 17-Sep-1729.
Thanks to everyone who has helped me locate this area. I feel I am getting
closer ... Now if someone would be willing to look-up the parish records for
Thornhill, or tell me how I can do it, then I'd really be getting close!

BTW, another of my ancestors was George Wishart, who was martyred at Saint
Andrews cathedral by Cardinal Beaton. I have not been able to trace my
lineage directly to George, but if I find out who William's parents were,
perhaps it may lead down that path ...
