Hello Janet,

You won't find many entries in the IGI newer than 1875. In addition most of
Perthshire has been omitted from the online version - for some reason noone
is quite sure of.

Errol is indeed a parish. It sits about half way between Dundee and Perth.
Longforgan is closer to Dundee.

Civil Registration began in 1855.

For obtaining post 1875 certificates you would be best going to the
Registrar General in Edinburgh. However if you are going to be researching
a lot in this area I would suggest looking at Tay Valley Family History
Society http://www.tayvalleyfhs.org.uk/ The LDS centre in Dundee has many
certificates from 1855-75 as well.

Best wishes,

Grant Buttars

in Errol, Perth and living in Longforgan, Perth. He has at that same place
, his father Alexander and mother Catherine as well as 6 other siblings. I
suspect that 2 others at different locations are also his siblings-David and
Alexander. My Aunt has said she believes there were 11 children.

Errol. I do know that in the 1881 census, there are many SHEPHERDs born in
Errol. Is Errol a Parish? Would anyone know if these records are
obtainable from the LDS? If so, what year might the Parish Records go up to
on microfilm?

I would assume that there is a Scottish Birth Index at the LDS centre. What
year was it mandatory? I know in England, civil registration began in
1837.

in Scotland or would it only be available in Edinburgh? We are planning
a short trip to Scotland at Xmas.
