Well, there is a lot on the web about the colony, so you will probably have
good luck with a break-through at some point.
Good luck to you,
Annie

According to my grandmother, our Petersons were of the Swedish Colony.

My Petersons were old New Amsterdam Dutch (meaning the Dutch who settled now
New York) they were there as early as 1638; the name changed over the years
and finally became Peterson about 1710...there were several descendant lines
of the Dutch carrying the English spelling of Peterson. Some of these
Petersons may have migrated to the Cumberland County, NJ, as I have run
across a few, but my Peterson line migrated into Hunterdon County, Bergen,
Sussex, Counties for the main. So, you may be looking at a Dutch name change
background, there was a Swedish Colony there as well in NJ early and a Swiss
line, carrying the name Peterson.
Good luck and if I run across any of names, I'll send an Email to you.
Best wishes,

Annie Peterson Johnson

Lemuel Peterson born 1764 NJ, died 1847 ILL lived with his father in
Cumberland Co NJ. He left his father's house in 1785 and moved to Delaware.
In 1800 Census, he had in his household a woman his age, and a boy and a
girl ages 10-16. Wife and children?

Then he moved to Ohio and was there a few years before moving on to Indiana.

We think wife 1 was now out of the picture and he married again with
children coming from 1804-1817 (my ancestor, Aaron Peterson). Family legend
had wife #2 as a Cherokee Indian, who was killed around 1817-1818 by her
brothers because she married a white man.

Then there was wife #3 with 2 children, and wife #4 with 6.

His name and that of his children were names that John Peterson (either he
or his wife was of the Mayflower) also used. Lemuel, Aaron Rhoda and
others.

We do not have Lemuel's ancestry, having searched for 30 years for it.

I am sorry, I wish I could help. My Petersons were from NJ, went to
Delaware, Ohio, Indiana, then Illinois, but I have no one with those names.

It might help others to help you if you posted where they lived in Illinois.

Hello list,
It's been a few years since I've posted my brick wall. I hope this time
someone can help tear it down.

My greatgreatgrandmother was Mary Catherine Peterson, I have seen it written
as Pederson but I believe
whoever wrote it that way was spelling it as it sounded to them.

My Mary was born 15 Dec 1838 in IL and died 06 Aug 1907 in Bosque Co. TX.
She married Edward Spencer New
in 1853 Mayfield, Graves Co. KY.

I "think" the following is her parents and sisters:

William Peterson and Sarah 'Sallie' Gibson?

Sisters:

Julia Peterson b abt 1839 IL
Narcissus Peterson b abt 1841 IL

Narcissus married Churchwell Burch 10 Jul 1859 Johnson Co. IL

I will greatly appreciate any help whatsoever.
