REV. SAMUEL PHILLIPS, born 1625 in England, was the first son of REV. GEORGE PHILLIPS
and ELIZABETH SARGENT. He sailed to MA with his parents in 1630. In 1651 Samuel married
SARAH APPLETON, daughter of SAMUEL APPLETON and JUDITH EVERARD. Rev. Samuel and Judith
lived in Rowley, Essex Co., MA where he was the minister of the First Congregational
Church of Rowley. He died there in 1696. She died in 1714.
Their children who lived to adulthood were:
1. SARAH PHILLIPS - born 1656; married STEPHEN MIGHILL in 1680, and secondly in 1687 to
ROBERT GREENOUGH, Sr.; died in 1706 in Taunton.
2. SAMUEL PHILLIPS, Jr. - born 1658; married MARY EMERSON in 1687 and secondly widow
SARAH (PICKMAN) MAYFIELD; He was a goldsmith in Salem, MA. He died in 1722. His grandson
SAMUEL PHILLIPS (b.1715) founded Phillips Academy in Andover, MA.
3. REV. GEORGE PHILLIPS - born 1664; married SARAH ELIZABETH HALLETT; served as minister
of the Congregational Church in Brookhaven, Suffolk Co., LI.; died there in 1739.
4. ELIZABETH PHILLIPS - born 1665; married REV. EDWARD PAYSON in 1683; died 1724. They
had 21 children! He became the minister of the church after her father's death.
