Hi Deb,
According to my 80 year old father it was customary to hold funeral services
from ones home if they couldn't afford the services of a funeral home. The
apartments mentioned may just have been the term used to describe the funeral
home, since they often had several rooms in the same building , so that more
than one veiwing could be held on the same day or evening. Pvt interment,
meant graveside service or actual burial was for family members only.
As for the letters of the two grops, these may have been fraternal orders,
that your relative belonged to. perhaps someone in Philly will know what they
stand for. hope this helps.
